Chapter One
Lady Challis sat in a large winged chair in the drawing room of Challis Manor, dabbing a scented handkerchief at her eyes and moaning quietly every few seconds. “My poor Edgar. My poor, dear Edgar!” Her daughters, Edith, Polly and Esther, sat close by and tried to comfort her, hoping to ease some of her grief, though they dearly would have loved to hide away in their rooms and give way to their own sorrow over the sudden death of their father, Edgar Challis.
