The Doctor's Bias

Tales of Basting Twill no.6

By F. Jane O'Brien

Chapter 1

Philly called out to her mother for help. “I don't know what to wear tonight.” Glenda Steed-Saddler poked her head around the door and peered into Philly's room to inspect the outfits laid on the bed. One was a silvery blue dress with long sleeves and a satin sash which tied on one side with a big bow. The other was a black trouser suit with sparkly embellishments on the jacket. A green silk organza dress was draped over Philly's arms. “The dresses are a touch formal, dear,” Glenda told her. “Why not go with the trouser suit? The gold embroidery will look so nice with your hair.” “All right,” Philly sighed. She wasn't looking forward to Colonel Chowder's annual New Year's Eve party, but her mother had begged her to accompany her, saying it would be a good opportunity to meet the doctor who'd be taking over for Dr. Pitstone for a few months. Her mother had said the Colonel was anxious to introduce his nephew, Dr. Eyre-Muchly, to some of the residents of Basting Twill before he himself left on a lengthy cruise.
