Heck's Kitchen

By F. Jane O'Brien

It's a busy night at Heck's Kitchen one of Calgary's most prestigious restaurants. Owner and head chef, Basil Flatleaf, is on edge, but what's new about that! Years of ranting and raving at his staff have put Basil's health in danger. His doctor insists that he must take time off or face the very real possibility of a stroke or heart attack. Pepper Creole and Chuck Hashburn, 2 sous chefs at Heck's Kitchen, are vying to take the job as new head chef. Julienne Courgette, Basil's own true love, is getting impatient with Basil's reluctance to tie the knot. Maybelle May, the pastry chef, is hearing “voices” - a psychological reaction to the many years she has spent cooking and living at the restaurant, without setting foot out of doors even once. Tray Porter, the sneaky busboy, has dug up the dirt on everyone who works at Heck's Kitchen and he uses his inside knowledge to blackmail and manipulate them all (plus many of the clientele). Nerves are shot – tempers are flaring – it could be that tonight murder will be on the menu at Heck's Kitchen!
